Deep in December it’s nice to remember
The fire of September that made us mellow
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow.

God has you safely in his keeping,
But we have you forever in our hearts.

Joan Kawamura Gum
Joan was our student body president in our senior year, competed in the statewide Junior Miss competition and placed 3rd runner up, and was a recipient of the Betty Crocker Award. She led an active life studying ballet and clarinet, but in the fullness of her life, the emphasis was on her family, friends and her love of the Lord. She touched the lives positively of everyone who knew her.  Joanie passed away in July 1983 from a brain embolism and left behind, her husband Duke Gum and two young children, Janna Marie then 6 years old and Charles Nicholas, then 2 years old. For our 20th Reunion, we solicited donations from you for a memorial scholarship to honor Joanie and in a little more than a one-month period of time we received generous donations to award two $450 scholarships to two graduates of the 1987 Class of University High School.

Sheila Kawaoka Grace
Our friend and classmate, Sheila Kawaoka Grace passed away of a heart attack on Sunday, March 28, 1993. She was survived by her husband Dale, daughter Melissa, parents Dr. Wallace and Mitsuko Kawaoka and brother Eric. Sheila was extensively involved in student government, clubs and the social life of the school. Her motto for her life was "Think with clarity, live with passion and soar with imagination." She lived her motto every day of her life. After graduating from UHS, Sheila attended the University of Hawaii and then Stanford University for graduate work in education. She worked in corporate education in the Palo Alto area after Stanford. Sheila was energetic, always upbeat, caring and loved life, her family, friends and her God.

Carol Digman Monroe
Carol Ann Digman participated in both Chorus and Drama Club in her senior year.  She didn’t attend UHS for very long. We lost track of this fun and pretty girl once she left for college. Yet as a member of the class of 1967 she remains in our hearts and memories. Born in 1949 in Columbus, Ohio to John and Betty Digman, she had a brother, also John, and a sister, Barbara. Carol Ann Digman Monroe died from cancer at 48 years of age on Feb. 3, 1998 in Los Angeles.

Margaret Nakamura Wesley
Margaret was the class valedictorian. She was also on the swim team. After high school, she attended Pomona College in California, where she met the love of her life, Bob Wesley. Both majored in mathematics, graduating in 1971. Bob went on to Stanford, while Margaret went to the University of Washington, accepting a graduate fellowship in biostatistics. After the first year, she accepted a fellowship at Stanford, and transferred there to be close to Bob. They were married in June 1972 on the Pomona College campus. Both graduated with Ph.D. degrees in Biostatistics, and accepted jobs with the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Margaret continued to swim and also loved music, playing the piano, guitar, and singing. She performed in a chorus and also in locally produced musicals in the Baltimore area. Their son, Brian, was born in 1982, graduating from the University of Maryland. Their daughter, Stephanie, was born in 1985, graduating from Pomona College in International Business and Russian. Margaret volunteered her time at their school. When they were in high school, she helped compile the reading list used for their classes, personally reading and critiquing every book on the list. This was something she continued to do until her death in 2005. In addition to her husband and children, Margaret is survived by her mother, Mrs. Irene Nakamura, sister Joyce Nakamura Tanoue, and brother Karl.

Gina Murphy
GINA MURPHY passed away on June 20, 2008. Born in Los Angeles. Retired art director, Hawaii Business Magazine; and retired publisher of Hawaii Buyers Guide. Survived by son, Ross Conquest; daughter, Stacey Selzer; mother, Ethel; brother, Joel.

I tried really hard to locate Gina for our 40th reunion. When we were in grade school, I used to go to her house and play jacks for hours.... I'm so sad to hear about her death. Marilyn Liu Kim

I do recall that she had a talent for art in high school, so I'm not surprised that as a career she was art director for Hawaii Business magazine. Daniel Ching

The Murphy, Mottl and Kelly families grew up together. Gina was another sister to me. I will miss her tremendously. Joseph “Pepi” Mott
